Chapter Twenty-Three

Sam pulled everyone into a huddle. They all leaned in close to hear what she had to say.

“All right,” she whispered. “We are certainly in a spot here, aren’t we?”

They nodded.

“Let’s assume that wherever we are, they can see our every move. Whoever they is. Let’s also assume they can hear us. Now, we have no weapons, no phones, and no idea what this building is, but have any of you seen a window?”

They all shook their heads.

“Underground then, most likely. Did any of you take stairs or an elevator to get here?”

“No,” Kyle whispered. “We were released from our room just like you were and walked down the hall to here. All they told all of us is that when Sam is finished, she will fill all of us in on what’s going on.”

“And you didn’t ask any other questions?” Sam said.

“We were all pretty disoriented coming out. Most of us were worse than you. Then there was no one to ask. We were told that your order was for us to sit tight.”

Sam shook her head. “What the hell is this? Were you all hooked up to an IV and a heart monitor too?”

The way Kyle jerked his head back and looked confused already told Sam his answer.

“What?” he said. “No. We were just lying on couches. You were hooked up like this was a hospital?”

Before Sam could answer, a man’s voice came through an intercom in the room.

“Formulating a master plan, are we?” a man with an American accent said.

Sam pulled them all back into a huddle and whispered. “Don’t say anything. Let’s just find a way out of here. We all stay together.”

They nodded.

“I already have what I need out of you. Now I just need you here until I have what I need from Alexander King.”

Every fiber of Sam’s being wanted to shout at the man from the speaker. But she knew it wouldn’t do any good. They just needed to find the exit. There had to be one somewhere.

Sam motioned them down the hall toward the room she’d come from. She also decided that whispering no longer mattered. The voice from the intercom clearly thought there was no way out, so hearing them try to work through how to find one seemed trivial. Sam stopped before she opened the door to the room.

“All right. We’re stuck in some lunatic’s basement. But apparently, he forgot that we are the elite operators that we are. Let’s work our way out of this. It can be the man’s entertainment while he awaits his death. Now, when I was in this room, a nurse, and then a doctor came in. Before you saw me, did you see either one of them?”

“No.” O’Connor said. “I was the first one in the lobby. I haven’t seen anyone other than us here at all.”

“Okay, good,” Sam said. “That means there is an exit somewhere on this side of the lobby.” Sam pointed at the door to the room she was in.
